Ghillie Dhu derives from Scottish Gaelic meaning ‘dark lad’ or ‘dark attendant’. Legends say that Ghillie Dhu was a protector of children, guiding lost travellers out of the forests. A benevolent woodfaerie who lived in the trees and shadows.

This series of mixed media pieces is about the hidden treasures of the woodland. Magic in the shadows and dark places, jewels of the forest glinting in the sunlight. These trinkets are not meant for us mortals but intended as sustenance for the magic and myth of Mother Nature.
Nature wraps her arms around all of what she sees here, the storm damaged and beaten, the weathered and the new born. She endures and she regrows, always. A series of mixed media pieces on canvas. I used layers of paper over paint, other papers, ink, conte, china marker and India ink.
