Familiar subjects appear again and again: crows and other Corvidae, donkeys, swans and an ever-growing cast of chickens. Repetition allows each subject to be approached differently, sometimes as a quick observation or compositional study, other times as a more developed drawing that begins to establish the personality and narrative of a future painting.
Alongside these preparatory works are figurative studies, self portraits, still lifes and drawings of other animals that have caught the artist’s attention. Some lead directly to finished paintings, while others remain simply drawings, records of observation, experimentation and ideas worth pursuing.
